Vehicle Control System Prevents 2 Vehicle Attacks at Naval Station

Delta Scientific DSC501 Prevents 2 Vehicle Attacks 8 Days Apart at Naval Station

On June 3, 2019, a driver, who police have not identified, stopped at the main gate of Naval Station Mayport but when he did not show any credentials to the guards, he was told to turn his car around and leave. Instead, he showed the guard a can of beer, gunned his engine and drove on. Security staff activated a Delta Scientific DSC501 pop-up barrier, which the man crashed into.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died two days later.

Eight days after the first incident, on June 11, a former Alabama basketball player crashed a Ford F-350 dump truck stolen from a Palm Coast landscaping business into the same barrier at the same Naval Air Station. The driver, identified as Rodney Simeon, was not injured. He was taken into custody by Jacksonville police. A gun and mask were found in the truck, but it wasn’t clear if they belonged to him.

Simeon had to be removed from court during his first appearance before a Duval County judge because he made an obscene gesture. He also laughed and smiled at television cameras.

A Mayport Naval Station spokesman said barriers stopped the truck from getting through Mayport’s gate and there were no injuries and no damage to naval property.

“This high-security barricade was originally designed for the U.S. Navy and has also been selected for use at U.S. Embassies, among many others. Set in a foundation only 18 inches deep, the Delta DSC501 is able to survive and operate after a 1.2 million foot pound impact,” attests Greg Hamm, Delta Scientific vice president, sales and marketing. “In testing, the DSC501 not only stopped and destroyed a 65,000-pound (5.4 million foot-pounds) dump truck but the barricade continued to stand, preventing a potential second attack.”
